How Retailers Are Growing Without Holding Stock — The Marketplace Model, with Jason Wyatt

Every retailer wants to offer more — more range, more categories, more reasons for customers to come back. The catch has always been the same: more product means more stock, more capital tied up, and more risk if it doesn't sell. It's the ceiling most retail businesses hit sooner or later.

On episode 2 of the SHFT Pod, we sat down with Jason Wyatt, CEO of Marketplacer, whose entire business exists to break through that ceiling. Here's the idea behind it.

The problem with the traditional retail model

In the classic model, if you want to sell something, you have to buy it first. You forecast demand, order stock, warehouse it, and hope it moves. Expanding your range means repeating that gamble across hundreds or thousands of new products — slow, expensive, and risky. Most retailers end up playing it safe and stocking only the sure things, leaving the “long tail” of niche products on the table.

What a marketplace model actually is

A marketplace flips that around. Instead of buying and holding every product yourself, you connect third-party sellers to your store and let them list their inventory. You expand the range; they hold the stock and fulfil the orders. It's the model behind the giants — Amazon, eBay — and increasingly behind familiar names closer to home, like Woolworths' Everyday Market.

The upshot: retailers can offer far more without the inventory risk, test new categories cheaply, and grow into the long tail they could never justify stocking themselves.

Why the model is taking off

A marketplace lets a business do three things that are hard the old way: extend range almost limitlessly, test new categories without committing capital, and add dropship revenue — all on top of the platform they already run, rather than rebuilding from scratch. In a tighter retail climate, growing revenue without growing inventory risk is a rare and valuable thing.

Meet Marketplacer — and Jason Wyatt

That's exactly what Marketplacer was built to do. The Australian-founded platform lets mid-market and enterprise businesses add a marketplace on top of their existing e-commerce setup through APIs and prebuilt connectors — no replatforming required. Its seller network spans thousands of global sellers, and the platform now powers marketplaces for the likes of Woolworths, with a network drawing billions of annual visitors. It's been named in Forrester's marketplace platform landscape and recognised by Gartner and CB Insights along the way.

Jason has built it with the discipline of an elite athlete and the clarity of a founder who's scaled through the hard yards — which is exactly what made him such a good guest.
