Walk down the drinks aisle and most hard seltzers blur into one — pastel cans, gentle branding, all fighting for the same shelf. Hard Fizz went the other way entirely. Loud, bold and impossible to ignore, it became one of Australia's fastest-growing beverage brands by refusing to blend in.
On episode 5 of the SHFT Pod, Dan and Erin sat down with Wade Tiller, co-founder and CEO of Hard Fizz, to unpack how it happened — and the honest reality behind building a high-growth brand.
Standing out in a crowded market
When you're launching into a category dominated by big players and lookalike products, being safe is the fastest way to disappear. Hard Fizz built its whole identity around standing out: unapologetically bold, a bit cheeky, and instantly recognisable. It's a masterclass in the idea that in a crowded market, a strong point of view beats trying to please everyone.
What Hard Fizz actually is
Hard Fizz is an Australian sparkling hard seltzer built for people who want a good time without the baggage — 77 calories, 99% sugar free, gluten free and vegan friendly, in flavours like Piña Colada, Passionfruit & Guava and Orange & Mango. The range has since grown to include vodka-based cans and an extra-strength line, and the brand has spilled off the shelf into its own Fizz Taproom for events and functions. From a standing start, it's become one of the country's fastest-moving drinks brands.
The part no one sees
The most valuable part of the conversation isn't the growth — it's what growth costs. Wade is refreshingly honest about the pressure that comes with building fast: the ambition that drives you, the toll it takes, and the slippery question of identity when your name and your business become the same thing. Most of all, he digs into a question every founder eventually faces but few talk about — what does “enough” actually look like?
It's the kind of honesty you rarely hear from someone in the middle of a growth story, and it's what makes the episode land for anyone building something of their own.
